about

This is the online space of michael j mcAghon. Professionally, I am a web designer / developer working in Philadelphia. Some free time is spent with skybased. Other time is spent making photographs… hence this site.

site

This photoblog is custom built with Ruby on Rails. It utilizes web standard XHTML and CSS written in the best text editor around, Textmate. I have also brought some AJAX to the party, which helps out on the home page switcher, live search and commenting.

a ”Flickr mirror“

Via my site’s admin, two things happen when I update this site:

  1. An entry is created on my site and in my database.
  2. That entry is then pushed to my Flickr account (level9ganon), with some help from the Flickr API and a Ruby gem called rflickr.

So by updating content here, my Flickr account is automatically populated with the same content.

What’s the point? While I appreciate the strength of Flickr’s community, the fact is I’m a designer and wannabe developer. I can’t fight the overwhelming desire to showcase my photography, in an environment I create and control. Therefore, I was driven to build a site that allows me the best of both worlds.

I guess can be a sucker for a challenge, or, um, maybe a glutton for punishment.

typography

The main navigation uses Pakt, available at YouWorkForThem. The rest of the type is available in my stylesheet.

equipment

I shoot with a sweet Nikon D70s, and pair it with the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G or a 50mm f/1.8D. Don’t be surprised to see me strap on my SB-800 flash when I want to look professional and bright.

When shooting 35mm, I use a Nikon N70 and scan in the negatives with an Epson 4990. For TTV work, I use either a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye or an Argus 75.

Thanks for stopping by, and welcome to your favorite photoblog....
